NEAL BIRNBAUM M.D.
Dr. Neal Birnbaum received his B.A. and M.D. degrees with honors from The Ohio State University and completed internal medicine and rheumatology training at the University of Pittsburgh before entering practice in San Francisco more than
40 years ago. Dr. Birnbaum founded Pacific Rheumatology Associates Medical Group in 1994 with David Curtis, MD. Throughout his career, Dr.Birnbaum has enjoyed the diagnostic challenges of rheumatology and the opportunity to work with his patients in developing their individualized treatment programs.
Dr. Birnbaum is committed to teaching the next generation of physicians, serving as Director of the Division of Rheumatology at California Medical Center since 1983 and also as Clinical Professor of Medicine at the University of California San
Francisco. He lectures frequently to residents and practicing physicians on various topics in the exciting field of rheumatology.
While maintaining a busy practice, Dr. Birnbaum has found time to serve in various voluntary leadership roles. He was twice chief of staff at California Pacific Medical Center and was president of the California Society of Medicine. Active for many years with the American College of Rheumatology, Dr. Birnbaum was ACR president in 2006-07. He was also Chairman of the Medical and Scientific Committee of the Arthritis Foundation, Northern California chapter and was a founding board member of the Scleroderma Research Foundation. In addition, Dr. Birnbaum was president of the California Society of Internal Medicine. In 2009, he co- authored a book for patients, The Complete Idiot’s Guide to Arthritis.
Dr. Birnbaum’s clinical expertise has been recognized by his peers by his inclusion in every edition of The Best Doctors in America since 1994. In 2011, he was honored to be named a Master of the American College of Rheumatology. Dr. Birnbaum received the Lifetime Achievement Award from the California Rheumatology Alliance in 2018. When not busy with medical activities, Dr.Birnbaum treasures time with his family, especially his grand-kids, Lily and Oliver. He enjoys international travel and golf on Sundays.
